The British Values are a set of five aspects to society that are delivered to students through several guises within the academy. The work of teaching staff in subject lessons, whole school assemblies, extra-curricular visits and trips are just some of the ways that students are able to ‘take in’ the diversity and privileges that we can all enjoy in life in 21st Century Britain. Ensuring that students are able to understand and articulate the importance of these, is of vital importance and is visually represented through each learning environment within the building. These posters have been included below for reference.

What are British Values?

Students

All students have an entitlement to be provided with opportunities which allow them to achieve their potential. To ensure they make a valuable contribution as members of their community.

Staff

Demonstrate high expectations in a climate of challenge and support based upon Quality Assured accountability.

Student’s development in values is essential in raising standards of attainment for all students and developing depth beyond the academic curriculum through questioning, reflection, discussion and evaluating others viewpoints. Nunthorpe academy believes that insisting on high expectations and an ethos of respect are an integral part of academy life.

The Academy promotes academy wide values which reflect the themes of British Values:

  • Democracy;
  • Rule of Law;
  • Individual Liberty;
  • Mutual respect
  • Tolerance of different faiths and beliefs.

Alongside the delivery of learning surrounding the British Values, we have a bespoke SMSC policy in place which aims to work in parallel with this. To read this policy, please click here.

Across all aspects of learning, here at Nunthorpe, we aim for all students to feel that they can both meet and exceed their potential. This will allow them to make valuable contributions to the community within the academy and beyond, as they prepare for life outside of school. Staff are vital in promoting this and have high expectations in a climate of challenge and support based upon Quality Assured accountability. By way of effective teaching, student’s development in values is essential in raising standards of attainment, developing depth beyond the academic curriculum through questioning, reflection, discussion and evaluating others viewpoints. Nunthorpe academy believes that insisting on high expectations and an ethos of respect are an integral part of academy life. All students are asked to respect each other, and our ethos is promoted by adults modelling behaviours and clear visual prompts.
