Parent Tips for Transition - Supporting the Transition to Secondary School

Background

Transition to secondary school is a major milestone for children. Our tips will help to reduce any anxiety that the child or parent / carer may be feeling about moving to secondary school.

Make time to talk

This is a big change and your child might have lots of different feelings about moving school. They might be excited but also have worries about what secondary school will be like. They may feel a sense of loss and worry about missing their old school, teachers and friends. Speak to your child, give them the opportunity to talk about their feelings and ask questions.

Saying goodbye

Create a memory book with your child to help them capture all the things they have enjoyed about primary school. Think about how to celebrate the ending. Find out what your child’s primary school are doing to say goodbye the Year 6 students.

Independence Skills

Before and during the holidays practise skills such as:

  • Travelling to and from school – this will help to know what time they need to set off on a morning;
  • Using money;
  • Making a packed lunch;
  • Packing their school pack.

New School Environment

Visit the school website, find out about the curriculum and the pastoral structure. Watch the virtual tour, how does the school day look. Find out what extra-curricular activities are available.

Connecting with new staff

Look at the pictures or welcome videos from the staff so some faces will be familiar in September. Key people, Head of school, Pastoral Managers and Y7 progress leader. Think about what information staff may need to know about your child.

Adam – Year 11

Good evening, everyone. My name's Adam, and I'm in Year 11, and I would like to share some thoughts with you about my time here. I know it’s difficult to believe, but it only feels like a heartbeat ago that I was in your position, sitting down, feeling nervous about going into Secondary School. I remember feeling anxious and overwhelmed, constantly asking questions like, "Are the teachers really scary? Will I make friends? Will I get lost?" The truth is it didn't take long to feel comfortable at all. The teachers are kind and supportive, and they’re always willing to help with any problems you might have. Some of my best friends, I made at Nunthorpe Academy. And… will you get lost? To be honest, I still get lost now, it’s only luck that I found my way here tonight!

Another thing that I have really enjoyed about my time here is the additional opportunities on offer for us all. I have particularly enjoyed the yearly musical performances of the drama department. Across my time here, I have been in several from Legally Blonde, to Little Shop of Horrors to The Addams Family and Matila. Such experiences have not only improved my confidence but allowed me to make friends with other year groups, which without, I wouldn’t have had the chance to. There really is something for everyone, so when you do arrive, be sure to check out the calendar of clubs/activities that we have on offer. I hope that you have a great evening and look forward to seeing you around next year.

Oskar – Year 11

Good evening everyone, my name is Oskar and I’d like to begin by saying how exciting this next part of your journey is going to be. I remember when I was in Year 6, just like you, thinking about my next big adventure. Moving from primary to secondary school is a huge step, and I know it can feel exciting but also a bit scary. But I honestly believe that Nunthorpe Academy is an incredible place to continue your educational journey.

At Nunthorpe, you’re not just joining a school, you’re becoming part of a community – a community that believes in bringing out the very best in every single student. Whether you love science, art, sports, or technology, there’s something here for everyone. The teachers at Nunthorpe are dedicated, passionate, and always ready to help you achieve your goals, whether they’re big or small. For me, that was to discover what I wanted to do with my life after leaving. I hope to now be able to realise my ambition, in working for the Foreign Office, thanks to the help of my form tutor and the support of my teachers.

 It's also down to the range of opportunities that I’ve been given here too. From discovering new subjects that you won’t have studied before to being given the chance to get involved in clubs, school trips, and events that will make your time at Nunthorpe, even more memorable. From drama productions to sporting competitions, there’s always something happening to keep you engaged and excited about learning. If it wasn’t for such activities, I would not have made the friends that I have now; those which will grow stronger as you go through key stage three, to four and maybe even five at our sixth form. I personally have loved the real sense of belonging that I have gained since being at Nunthorpe, whether this be through my friendship with others or my form and subject teachers.

So, as you begin to think about your next steps, know that Nunthorpe is a place that welcomes you, challenges you, but most importantly; helps you grow. I can’t wait to see some of you here in the future, making the most of everything Nunthorpe has to offer! Good luck with the rest of your time in Year 6, and we hope to see you soon!

Phoebe – Year 9

Good evening, my name is Phoebe, and I am a former pupil from Captain Cook Primary School and I am now a Year 9 student at Nunthorpe Academy.

I remember sitting where you are 3 years ago. I remember feeling excited but also really nervous about Year 6, SATS and moving up to a new school. I was so comfortable in my primary school – I knew everyone, knew the building and all of the staff – I knew what to expect on a daily basis. Deep down I honestly didn’t really feel like I was ready to move up to the big school – it almost didn’t feel real, but here I was sat where you are now.  Welcome to Nunthorpe gave me the chance to look around the building, meet the staff and also the students. My worries and fears soon started to disappear. My advice for you tonight, to both students and parents, is get involved in all of the amazing activities that are going on, ask lots of questions, embrace this moment and don’t be scared. You will love it – I did!

Once I knew I was coming to Nunthorpe we had lots of contact from the school itself. Staff came to visit us in my Primary school, answering all our questions and making us feel better about coming here. I then attended the school for a whole week for transition. This was absolutely brilliant, and I loved every minute of it. We had an entire week to experience all of the lessons and be part of the Nunthorpe Community. I experienced what a typical day at Nunthorpe would be like. I made lots of new friends from lots of different schools. My closest friends are now not the friends I had in primary school – although I am still friends with them. Just look around the hall now and just think my best friend could be here with me now and I haven’t even met them yet!!

As I said I am now a Year 9 student, and I genuinely do love school. The last 3 years have honestly been brilliant and have gone so fast. I enjoy being part of the Nunthorpe family. I embrace all opportunities that come my way and am even a member of the school council, where we get involved in many school events. The staff at the school support and encourage students to be the best that they can.

When I leave school, I would like to become a Doctor, and I know that to do this I will need to do my A Levels. I pick my options this year and will start my GCSE journey next year at this time. I intend on staying at Nunthorpe for the next 5 years and attending the Sixth Form here as it is one of the best in the area and I know that I will be given the best opportunities to reach my desired career.

Nunthorpe has an ethos of Ready Respectful Safe. I can honestly say I am a Nunthorpe Academy student, and I am Ready, Respectful and feel very Safe.
